Survivors guilt often adds to our grief. But let it go. There is no need for you to punish yourself for oversights or omissions. Any true believer can say Christ died for my sins. Say it; believe it; cling to it; and let no one deny it!

When I recently put together this joyful tune, my wife, Nan, wanted to provide the words. She chose the words from Henry Baker's The King of Love My Savior Is. Baker's words are derived from Psalm 23.
- Sandpaper, Chisels, and Hammers
The normal and common aggravations of life do not stop, nor do they even let up, after the heart-rending loss of a loved one. Instead, they become even more aggravating and frustrating than before. This song was written to help people to respond biblically in the midst of their troubles.
- I'm Not Alone
This song is designed to encourage lonely believers who feel that they no longer have anything to live for. Each verse begins with a new theme: I'm not Alone, In Christ Alone, For Christ Alone, and Through Christ Alone.
- Peace, Perfect Peace
A song for fighting against the temptation to believe life is ruled by chance.
- Jesus My Savior Look on Me
From page 140 of the old Trinity Hymnal, I have substituted the old tune for one that is more reflective of the way a man grieves.
- Since I Belong to Thee
In this poem, Octavius Winslow describes how God is his strength and stay, even in his saddest hour.
- Is It For This
In the book The Message, Eugene Peterson paraphrases Matthew 5:4 like this, "You're blessed when you feel you've lost what is most dear to you. Only then can you be embraced by the One most dear to you." In this poem Octavius Winslow describes what it is like to be embraced and comforted by Jesus Christ.
- In the Midst of Evening Twilight
After I lost my son I could not stand for it to be dark outside. Even as early as 3:00 in the afternoon I would start to get depressed. This song helped me to deal with the evening twilight.
- Disturb Us Not You Clouds of Gray
Dark, cloudy days exacerbate the affects of grief. This song is a marching song against the compounded grief of cloudy days.
- You Who Are Touched With Feeling of Our Woes
Written by Octavius Winslow after his son, Whitmore, died suddenly at the age of 21.

- I Sing a Song of Happiness
When death takes away the happiness that we used to find in our loved ones, a Godward focus will cause us to seek the happiness that no one can take away -- the happiness that we find in God. This song celebrates the happiness we find through being forgiven.
- The Lord is Watching Over You
Romans 8:28 describes how God uses everything that happens to us to conform us to the image of Christ. For the Christian, not only is no suffering wasted, but God is using it for good.
- In His Love He Has Redeemed Us
Based on 1 Peter 1:3-5, this song describes God's preservation of his people.
- Sometimes a Light Surprises
An amazing discovery during our season of grief was the way God sometimes breaks through, even in the midst of great sorrow, and overcomes us with the joy of His presence. These words by William Cowper have as their theme, Malachi 4:2.
- I Will Rejoice in the Lord
Written during vacation, March 2004, this song reflects a resolve to rejoice in the Lord who saves souls. It is based on Isaiah 61:10-11.
- O Lord You Are My Rock
In Psalm 18, David praises God for saving him from Saul. However, the psalm quickly leaves David and moves to Christ, focussing not only on his victory over sin and Satan, but looking towards that future day when God will come to judge the earth.
- Why Do We Do All the Things That We Do
Sometimes those who are left bereaved of all their children are left with the sense that they have nothing left to live for. However, if we have God at the center of our affections, we know that there is no greater reason for living than for the glory of God. This should underlie everything that we do, even the way we grieve.
- Psalm 8
There is a sense of weakness and helplessness during times of intense grief. Sometimes we feel as helpless as little children. But Psalm 8 says that God has ordained praise, even from the mouths of infants. So let us praise our God, even in the midst of our grief, while the inhabitants of the unseen world watch in wonder.

This Psalm describes the faith and confidence that Jesus had as he faced death, setting an example for all of us.
- Ecclesiastes 12
This is a song of warning to those who would deal carelessly with their eternal destiny.
- Psalm 22
Even when Jesus faced His darkest hour, there was no doubt that He would prevail. Hundreds of years before the crucifixion took place, this Psalm was written, celebrating the victory of Jesus Christ, with Jesus leading the brethren in hymns of triumph and praise to God.
